Install the extension
On a computer, in Chrome (or another Chromium browser) or Firefox 140 or later. Its options page opens immediately.

Add your API key
Create a key with your chosen provider and paste it into the options page, which you can reopen as needed from your browser's extension management page.

Dictate

Frequently asked questions
How does Babel Fish AI work?
You start recording with Ctrl+Shift+1 (⌘+Shift+1 on Mac) or the extension icon, and stop it the same way. The extension then sends the audio to your chosen provider, which returns the text. It inserts the text into the active field, copies it to the clipboard if no field is active, or displays it in a floating window, after translating it if you have enabled translation.
Which languages are supported?
The extension's interface and translation support 15 languages: French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Romanian, Swedish, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. For transcription, your provider's model detects the spoken language itself.
Is the extension free?
Yes: free, ad-free and open source (AGPL-3.0 license). It works with your own API key, and your provider charges you for API usage according to its pricing.
Is my data protected?
The extension stores neither your recordings nor your texts, and sends nothing to its author: your voice and texts go directly to your chosen provider, over HTTPS for the built-in providers. In Chrome, this provider receives the name of the site where you dictate (for example, chatgpt.com). Your API keys stay in your browser, which syncs them with your account if synchronization is enabled. What each provider then does with your data is governed by its own policy: with a free Gemini key, outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, Google may use your dictations and texts to improve its products, potentially including human review. Which browsers does it work in?
On a computer, in Chrome and Chromium-based browsers, and in Firefox 140 or later. It does not work on mobile.
Can I use my own model or server?
Yes: the Custom/LiteLLM provider accepts a service compatible with OpenAI's API, such as a LiteLLM proxy. You can also choose one provider for transcription and another for text actions.
